The Disconnect

saw a post of facebook that they needed volunteers to ride to Baltimore and help feed the youth, i responded said yes i could go and assist. got up at 7am was on route 18 at 8:20 am and at 49th and Baltimore by 9:15am. i recognize this woman from the Brandon Tate Brown march so i assume they are the ones organizing the rides to Baltimore to feed our youth. i walk over and introduce myself, hi i'm Alicia Dorsey, oh i know you replies the woman, i say yeah we marched together against police brutality. she says you're with Al Sharpton, i proudly reply yes i am. i asked are you going to the million mom march on mothers day? the woman said probably not.  she huddles with the gentleman and states that she doesn't want me to go with them. as i look into her car and see the wooden rosemary hanging from the rear view mirror.

i'm told that Miles has also arrived to ride, he has a friend in Baltimore who is working on a peaceful movement. quites kept we bout tired of that peaceful movement, peacefully keep dying at the hands of the law, peacefully keep getting raped by the hands of the law, peacefully keep being oppressed at the hands of the law. The constitution of the U.S. was created over gunfire, please know the facts.
i meet Andrea and Jacob. Andrea is driving and doesn't mind taking all of us. The woman uses the excuse that all the malls and markets are closed in Baltimore so we have to load the cars up with food versus people. i mention that the woman doesn't want me to attend because of my affiliation with Rev. Al Sharption National Action Network, which by the way the Philadelphia chapter is a joke, and that's another story. and the others are saying don't mind her. the pain of my son being put in icu by the Philadelphia police speaks and i begin to cry and now i really don't want to ride anywhere but home. before i leave i mention that this is the problem with advocacy, people and their bullshit politics and judgmental ways keep us from coming together to advocate for the cause whatever that may be.

the disconnect takes a step farther when i read on septa an ad that reads islam preaches hate towards jews. stop the hate.

so i don't get which part of the jewish community felt a need to post that sign. i have participated in several interfaith peace walks organized by multiple faiths, held in an islamic mosque with Jewish leaders in attendance. so how this disgusting example of disconnect within religious communities is running on our public transportation is beyond my belief. There is quite a bit going on in our society and international community that is really blowing my mind.

man, growing up i use to always wonder how do Russian and Chinese people live like that, in complete control of a dictator who cares nothing bout the people, yet they do everything they were told to do. Creepy to me.

EMPOWERMENT: Provide empowerment for all women to be who they are without restriction or interference.

SUPPORT: Provide foundational support to all women in their endeavours for reflective, artistic, and professional success.

COMMUNITY: Provide a safe space community for all women seeking refuge from the misogyny of everyday life. Providing women the environment to be, do, and say, whatever they feel.

EDUCATION: Providing intersectional education under the umbrella of womanhood and all it encompasses. Striving to create a culture where women and the LGBTQ community are not bound by the rules of society, often dictated by men, patriarchy, racism, classism, hegemonic masculinity, and heteronormativity. Striving to create a culture of people who respect women, are compassionate and understanding towards the struggles of womanhood, and seek to better the conditions of women/LGBTQ everywhere.

Pussy Riots

The rule of the iron fist is being challenged by women and men in Russia. Punk Rock is banded in Russia, Freedom of Speech is banded in Russia, Journalism is a deadly calling in Russia, LGBTQ is banded in Russia, Human Rights is banded in Russia and Corruption defines Russia. There is 137 countries examined for government corruption, Russia is ranked the 133rd most corrupted country and The United States is ranked at 19 on the list.

On March 3, 2012, two of the group members, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova andMaria Alyokhina, were arrested and charged with hooliganism. A third member, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was arrested on March 16. Denied bail, they were held in custody until their trial began in late July. On August 17, 2012, the three members were convicted of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred", and each was sentenced to two years imprisonment.[8][9][10] Two other members of the group, who escaped arrest after the February protest, reportedly left Russia fearing prosecution.[11] On October 10, following an appeal, Samutsevich was freed on probation and her sentence suspended. The sentences of the other two women were upheld.[12] In late October 2012, Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova were sent to separate prisons.[13] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pussy_Riot

As i watched the film "Pussy Riot" directed by Natasha Fissiak,i felt inspired by the courage of the women who stand against the oppression going on in their country. A country who is growing backwards with penis envy that instills fear into citizens of Russia then blames the west for their blind black eyes. How to do you oppress a nation? Poorly educate the masses and forbid them knowledge of their constitutional rights. Better yet do what Pennsylvania Senator Anthony Williams did and change the constitution to fit their personal gains.

The biggest challenge in advocacy is getting the masses to understand their rights and join the movement. In Russia and The United States of America the citizens are living a broken life and seek freedom from fear. The women of Pussy Riot are working to develop a culture of protest to bridge the disconnect in their culture. They are having the dialogue that most want to ignore and like the Zapatista women they are enhancing the lives of Russian citizens. Knowledge is Power and the women of Pussy Riot are sharing their knowledge with the world.

ADDRESSING SUPERIOR MENTALITY

i attended Philly Premiere: “Out In The Night” by Blair Doroshwalther at Drexel University's URBN Center Annex (3401 Filbert Street). A great documentary based on four lesbian women who were put in prison for defending themselves. Great exposure on how women and transgender are further raped by a society that plays blind to women and femmes as human beings. The human rights of women and femmes are denied by superior mentality and this mentality is what we really need to have a conversation about.

Blair stated that she learned about The New Jersey Four from the first reports of their case and wanted to cover their story because she works on these issues. Blair questioned herself about producing the documentary because of the color of her skin. She didn’t think that she should document, because she’s caucasian and the victims are women of color. Perfect example of culture clash, the organizer in Blair saw a story that needed more attention but was hesitant because of culture to approach the women and ask to document their story. The common thread of exposing injustice allowed all involved to get to know each other and tell the story of how women are harshly raped and punished while men get a slap on the wrist. Getting to know the persons and subject is very important if we want to build each other versus control each other. “Out In The Night” premiere panel discussion showed a woman director from a different culture that partnered with four women to raise awareness of the torture of women trapped in a male dominated justice system. No exploitation, no twisting the facts, no pacifying.

Listening to the panel discussion and Patreese call for us to come together i realized that we could come together with honest conversation about superior thinking. Lately most everyone i meet has Quaker background. i had a conversation with a woman who identified as Quaker and socially responsible. She told me that in light of #BlackLivesMatter that she and others of “superior status are coming together to figure out how to address the racism going on in our society.” i asked her to record their meetings for that is revolutionary. Superior thinking created racial bias and facing those attributes in oneself is not always easy. Learning to communicate with diverse cultures can also be a challenge when you have been conditioned not to respect or recognize cultures outside of your comfort zone. We really need to continue this conversation that got some sparks with Philadelphia magazine “Being White In Philly”.

Before entering the premiere i had time to view Ray Bartkus “STORYLINE” in The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery at Drexel University's URBN Center Annex (3401 Filbert Street). i walk into the gallery and my spirit tells me here is some of your documentary STORYLINE IN LIVING COLOR!! Who's controlling Who? Mr. Ray Bartkus has amazing talent, his paintings look like a photo, the details are filled with life almost like looking at reality t.v.!! #art4justice
