i attended Dr. Obari Cartman's "Oppurtunities and Challenges For Young Black Males" Firday, May 8, 2015 at Tree House Bookstore 1430 susquehanna ave. Philadelphia. i've been looking for a way to change derogatory behaviours towards all people and started hosting google hangouts #changingattitudestowardswomenandfemmesworldwide2015 in march. the challange in hosting the hangouts is finding people who want to change their behaviour towards all and developing the conversation that opens eyes on the sensitive topics of gender.
i heard about dr. cartman on facebook and asked if i could record his presentation. he agreed and to my surprise i met a young man who is senitive to the issue of black males and culture.
what an eye opening presentation on the african american culture and the various forms of rape that stripped us of what is real in being african/native american. heartbreaking viewing an ebony magazine that read "is black women getting prettier" depicting light skin african americans as pretty. i deleted ebony from my facebook and twitter links. i've always wonder how did the woman of color value get lost in the african american community and seeing a magazine named "Ebony" put light skin blacks aganist dark skin blacks is horrible.
The definition of a dark skin tone. Ebony people are also referred to as black or colored. The word derives from the dark hardwood native to southern India and Sri Lanka. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Ebony
i'm learning that being african american has various meanings depending on the circumstance.
Now let's present these two pictures to an African man and ask him which one he would Prefer to date...Desperation for male affection and attention drives African women to bleach. Sadly, it's about survival and "respect". There needs to be a psychological campaign to reverse male/female thinking and encourage people of all colors to see beauty as a matter of health (i.e.glow), not shade. from Mutiyat Ade-Salu
so in my exploration, i am looking to host this conversation and hope to partner with dr. cartman in the future. there are so many issues and concerns in or community, that i figured i would start with the issues on surface, the cuts to resources and how we treat each other. after viewing dr. cartman's presentation i'm seeing a need to have the culture conversation also. on the google hangout we wanted to touch on culture but stayed with the concerns on surface. i will find a way to incorporate both concerns.
"Lady's Man" is a great read for men of color and focus on raising awareness of who they are and how they got to that identity/culture. Nothing cute about being raped or raping a person. some of us have become rapist because the culture is accepted. seeing a white woman take pleasure in examining a slave man of color genitals, a man i consider my brother confirms the gutt wrenching feeling in me that interracial relationship is rape of a culture. four generations ago rape that stabs me every time i see a african american women wearing weave imitating the rapist of our culture, the four generations ago rape that preaches to my sons not to bring a white woman in my home if he plans on being in a relationship with her. killed me when i came home and there was a red head whited girl in my son room. told him to get her out of the house immediately and he will be disowned if he pursues that relationship. he cut her and hopefully that will be the last of that.
