This Election Day, Philadelphia Central High School will open it's doors to educators, community, parents, and students in a truly democratic day of professional development. After hitting the polls in the morning, teachers and guests will exercise their right to choose again. But instead of selecting their favorite candidates, they will select the topics of professional development that will benefit their practice, their students, and the future of a city that depends on a great system of education. It's not the usual top-down district-mandated variety, but a grassroots teacher-led day of creativity and city-wide networking.
Traditionally, school or district administration selects the topics for teacher workdays. While this system can be beneficial in that all teachers receive the same information or instruction, it can also be hampered by a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Five years ago, Central decided to try something a little different; why not ask educators to step in to lead and facilitate the workshops themselves, offer smaller workshops, and let the school staff members choose the topics of interest and best use to them?
There is a vast knowledge base among educators to tap into. Teacher-led workshops provide hands-on, practical information that can be immediately put to use in the classroom by other educators. The opportunity to work in solidarity with community organizations, parents, and students is essential in an environment where educators are under attack and public schools and urban communities are being defunded and stressed. This style of professional collaboration is meaningful, and has a direct and transformative impact in the classroom that goes well beyond the schools.
Timothy McKenna, President of Central High School, believes in this type of professional learning model. “The goal of each session will be for participants to walk away with new tools to support student learning. It is powerful when teachers share best practices with other teachers. Central High School is proud to host such an important day of professional collaboration.”
This year's topics are as varied as they are relevant to the times. Here is a small sample:
Breaking the Screen Door: Technology for Deep Learning
Standardized Testing Panel Facilitated by the Home & School Association
