State Representative Curtis Thomas is hosting a series of press conference on our Pennsylvania operating and fiscal budgets. During the conference State Rep. Thomas suggest that smokeless tobacco, and cigars be taxed to raise revenues for our schools. Cancer sticks are taxed but the cigar and smokeless industry have been able to avoid being taxed. We can contact our legislators and ask them to support fiscal revenues that can fund our schools, such as taxing the Marcellus Shale at 7% with 2% being directed to the local communities and the other 5% to education.
State Rep. Thomas also mentioned that the pension reform was vetoed due to picking of winners and loser. Wild the reform would require elected officials to become new hires when elected to office, regardless of tenure and exempted from any pension changes were judges and prison guards.
We also learned that Cheyney University has been neglected and discriminated against because the population is African American. Pennsylvania has been attacking educational opportunities for African Americans on every level of learning opportunities. Cheyney didn't get any love during the stimulus or Corbett administration. State Rep. Thomas proposed to assist Cheyney with a twenty first century Cheyney Commission.
We are fortunate to have such a champion of the people in State Rep. W. Curtis Thomas. He gives great advice and resources to our communities. State Rep. Thomas also mentioned that he is looking to build STEM centers in our communities and i plan to be part of those centers.
